What About the Dog Mess?
Last Updated 2 months ago

It is an offence not to clear up after your pet and you could receive a Fixed Penalty Notice (FPN) of up to £100 on the spot if you do not pick up after your dog. Non-payment can result in an escalation in costs if the matter is taken to court.

Not having bags or claiming you didn’t know do not make you exempt from this law.

Dog fouling in public places is governed by the Anti-social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act of 2014 for England and Wales.

Pet faeces if also danger to wildlife as it can carry diseases, scare away animals, and the fertilisation from it can cause an imbalance in the local habitats. Contact can also cause toxocariasis, which can lead to seizures, breathing problems and blindness.

The easiest way to clean up after your dog is always to carry dog mess bags with you and pick up immediately after them. You can never know when your dog is going to go when you are out so, if you have a pet, always have these with you.

Never leave dog mess in or out of bags in public space. Take it home and dispose of it responsibly in all cases.

Always clean up after your pet.

With evidence, Betts will report anyone who does not clean up and dispose of their dog’s faeces properly. Simply putting in a bag and leaving it is not enough and hanging it in trees as some do is unacceptable and antisocial. It also raises the Annual Service Charge as Betts staff have to clean it up and this takes additional time and resources.
